Taveuni is Fiji's third-largest island and its greenest, a long volcanic ridge so thick with rainforest that it is known as the Garden Island. Waterfalls drop through the jungle of Bouma National Heritage Park on the east coast, the Somosomo Strait on the west side carries the soft corals of Rainbow Reef, and the 180th meridian crosses the island near Waiyevo, where a marker lets you stand with a foot in each hemisphere (the date line itself bends around Fiji, so both sides keep the same date). Birdwatchers come for the orange dove, and the hike up to the crater lake of Tagimaucia leads to the tagimaucia, Fiji's national flower, growing wild in the high forest.
When to go
The dry season, May to October, is the best time for hiking and for the flights in, with cooler air and clearer water on Rainbow Reef. Taveuni is one of the wettest corners of Fiji, though, and the east coast sees rain in every month; the wet season, November to April, brings heavy downpours, fuller waterfalls, muddy trails and cyclone risk. Diving in the Somosomo Strait is good all year, since the tidal currents that feed the corals run in every season. Pack a light rain jacket whatever the month.
Getting there from Montreal
Taveuni is a long journey from Eastern Canada, with two or more connections. From Montreal (YUL) you connect through a US west coast hub such as Los Angeles or San Francisco to Nadi, then take a domestic flight of about 90 minutes on a small plane to Matei airstrip at the island's northern tip; from Quebec City (YQB) add a first connection through Montreal or Toronto. Ferries also run from Suva and from Buca Bay on neighbouring Vanua Levu, the island where Savusavu sits. You lose a calendar day on the date line, and small planes enforce strict baggage limits, so pack light. Most lodges and resorts arrange the transfer from Matei, which takes anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour depending on where you stay.

Good to know before you go
One main road runs along the west and north coasts, and getting around means taxis, lodge transfers and a handful of local buses a day, so plan outings with your accommodation; there is no ride-hailing. The currency is the Fijian dollar and ATMs are few, concentrated around Somosomo and Naqara near Waiyevo, so bring enough cash for the stay and expect cards only at the larger resorts. English is widely spoken alongside Fijian, and bottled or filtered water is the safer choice. Bouma and Lavena charge a small entry fee that goes to the villages that manage them, and the Lake Tagimaucia hike is long and muddy and needs a local guide. Dive Rainbow Reef with an operator who times the dives to the tides, since the currents in the strait are strong.
