Savusavu is a small harbour town on the south coast of Vanua Levu, Fiji's second-largest island, set on a deep, sheltered bay that cruising yachts from across the Pacific use as a port of entry. Steam rises from hot springs along the waterfront, where locals still cook food in the boiling pools, and the main street runs past the Copra Shed marina, a few cafés and the market. Offshore, the Koro Sea holds some of the country's finest diving, pearls are farmed in the bay, and the green hills behind town are covered in rainforest.

When to go

Fiji's dry season, May to October, is the most comfortable time, with cooler nights, lower humidity and calmer seas for boat trips and the small-plane flights in. The wet season, November to April, is hotter and steamier, brings heavy downpours and is cyclone season, so build some flexibility into the trip and keep an eye on forecasts. Diving in the Koro Sea runs year round, with the water warmest in the wet months and visibility often best in the dry ones. Sundays are very quiet across Fiji, with most shops closed and the day built around church.

Getting there from Montreal

Savusavu is one of the more remote trips you can plan from Eastern Canada. From Montreal (YUL) you connect through a US west coast hub such as Los Angeles or San Francisco to Nadi on Viti Levu, then take a domestic flight of about an hour on a small plane to Savusavu's airstrip just outside town; from Quebec City (YQB) add a first connection through Montreal or Toronto, which makes three in total. Some travellers come by the overnight ferry from Suva instead. You lose a calendar day crossing the date line, and small domestic planes have tight baggage limits, so pack light. Taveuni, a separate island to the east, is a short hop away by small plane, or by road to Buca Bay and a ferry across the Somosomo Strait.

What to see and do

  • Diving and snorkelling the Namena Marine Reserve in the Koro Sea
  • The hot springs and the Copra Shed marina waterfront
  • The forest trail and waterfall at Waisali Rainforest Reserve

Good to know before you go

The town centre is a single walkable strip along the bay; beyond it you rely on taxis, which wait near the market and are cheap for short runs, plus local buses and minivans heading to Labasa and along the Hibiscus Highway, and there is no ride-hailing. Resorts, dive shops and pearl farm tours generally pick you up, and Waisali, in the hills on the road to Labasa, is easiest by taxi or with a guide. The currency is the Fijian dollar: there are ATMs in town, but carry cash for villages, buses and small shops. English is widely spoken alongside Fijian and Fiji Hindi, and bottled or filtered water is the safer choice. If you visit a village, bring a bundle of kava root (yaqona) to present as sevusevu, cover your shoulders and knees, and take off your hat.
