Udaipur is the lake city of Rajasthan, founded in the 16th century by the rulers of Mewar and built around a chain of artificial lakes in the green Aravalli hills. The City Palace stretches along Lake Pichola, white palaces seem to float on its islands, and the old town climbs in a tangle of lanes from the ghats to the Jagdish Temple. Evenings run slow here, with dinner on a rooftop facing the water and folk dance at Bagore ki Haveli beside Gangaur Ghat.
When to go
October to March is the most comfortable stretch, with warm days, cool nights and lakes still full after the monsoon; it is also wedding season, so book ahead around Diwali and Christmas. April to June is very hot. The monsoon, July to September, turns the hills green and fills the lakes, a good time to come if a few showers do not bother you. After a weak rainy season, lake levels can drop noticeably by spring.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
There is no nonstop from Canada, and Udaipur is usually two connections away. From Montreal (YUL) the common routing goes through a European or Gulf hub to Delhi or Mumbai, then a short domestic flight to Udaipur; from Quebec City (YQB) add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. Road and rail links with Jaipur make it a natural extension of a Golden Triangle trip. Maharana Pratap Airport is at Dabok, east of the city, about 40 minutes from the old town by taxi.
What to see and do
- A boat on Lake Pichola out to Jag Mandir
- The City Palace above the lake
- The evening folk dance show at Bagore ki Haveli
- Sunset at the Monsoon Palace (Sajjangarh)
- A day trip to Kumbhalgarh Fort and the Jain temple of Ranakpur
Good to know before you go
The old town around the City Palace and Lal Ghat is compact and best explored on foot, though its narrow lanes are shared with motorbikes and the odd cow. Auto-rickshaws wait on every corner, so agree on the fare first, or book through Uber or Ola for longer rides to Fateh Sagar Lake and the Monsoon Palace; Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur are best done with a driver for the day. The currency is the Indian rupee; UPI phone payments dominate, foreign cards work in hotels and larger shops, and cash covers autos and small vendors. Canadians need a visa for India, normally the e-Visa, but the rules for Canadian passport holders have changed in recent years, so check the current situation before booking. Drink bottled water, and take off your shoes and dress modestly at the Jagdish Temple.
