Uluru rises 348 metres out of the flat red plain of central Australia, a single sandstone monolith that changes colour through the day and sits at the heart of Anangu country. Together with the 36 domes of Kata Tjuta, some 25 km to the west, it forms Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, listed by UNESCO for both its landscape and its living culture. Everything starts from Yulara, the small resort town beside the airport, from where you head out at dawn to walk around the base, sit by the waterholes and watch the rock glow at sunset.

When to go

Central Australia is desert, so the seasons are about heat rather than rain. Autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) are the most comfortable, with warm days and cool nights; winter (June to August) brings clear, mild days around 20°C but nights that can drop below freezing, so pack a real jacket for sunrise. Summer, December to February, regularly pushes past 40°C, and on very hot days some walks, including the full Valley of the Winds loop, close from late morning. Bush flies are thick in the warmer months, and a cheap head net makes a big difference.

Getting there from Montreal

Uluru is about as remote as a trip from Eastern Canada gets. From Quebec City (YQB) you first connect through Montreal, Toronto or a US hub, cross the Pacific from Vancouver or the US west coast to Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, then take a domestic flight into Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ); from Montreal (YUL) the routing is the same with one step fewer. Plan on two or three connections, well over a day in transit and a calendar day lost crossing the date line. Some travellers fly into Alice Springs instead and cover the roughly 450 km on a coach tour. The airport is a few minutes from Yulara, where the resort shuttle meets every flight.

Good to know before you go

Inside Yulara a free resort shuttle loops between the hotels, the campground and the town square; to reach Uluru and Kata Tjuta you rely on shuttle services or guided tours, since there is no Uber or public transport in the park, and bikes can be hired at the Cultural Centre to ride the flat base track. Everyone needs a multi-day park pass. The currency is the Australian dollar, cards work almost everywhere and tap water in Yulara is safe, but phone coverage fades quickly outside town. Carry far more water than you think (rangers suggest about a litre per hour of walking in the heat) and start walks early. Climbing Uluru has been banned since October 2019 at the request of its Anangu owners, and several sacred sections of the rock are signed as off limits to photography, so respect both.
