Saint Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands and the most relaxed of the three, a long, rolling island of Danish colonial towns, ruined sugar-mill towers and reef-lined bays. Christiansted, on the north shore, keeps its yellow fort and arcaded streets from the Danish era, while Frederiksted on the west end slows down around its long pier and sunsets over open water. Offshore, Buck Island has a marked underwater trail across its reef.

When to go

December to April is high season, with dry, breezy days, calm water on the north shore and the highest hotel rates. May to August stays hot and sunny with fewer visitors, while September and October are the peak of the June to November hurricane season, when some restaurants and small hotels close for a few weeks. The Crucian Christmas Festival runs through the holidays into early January, with parades, food fairs and mocko jumbies on stilts.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There is no nonstop from Quebec City or Montreal. From Montreal (YUL), expect one or two connections through a US hub such as Miami or Charlotte, sometimes ending with a short hop from San Juan; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal, Toronto or a US gateway. The US Virgin Islands are US territory, so you clear US entry at preclearance in Montreal or at your first American airport. Henry E. Rohlsen Airport is on the south-west coast, about 15 minutes from Frederiksted and 25 from Christiansted by taxi.

What to see and do

  • Snorkelling the underwater trail at Buck Island Reef
  • Christiansted's waterfront boardwalk and Fort Christiansvaern
  • Sunset at the Frederiksted pier and Rainbow Beach
  • Sunrise at Point Udall, often called the easternmost point of the US
  • The Estate Whim plantation museum
  • Rum distillery tours at Cruzan and Captain Morgan

Good to know before you go

Transit is thin: VITRAN buses run the main road between Christiansted and Frederiksted, and taxis charge set per-person rates by destination, so confirm the fare before you get in. Ride-hailing apps have little to no presence and many visitors rent a car, but traffic drives on the left and agencies often add fees under 25, so taxis and tours with hotel pickup are easier for young travellers. The currency is the US dollar, cards are widely accepted, and English is spoken with a Crucian lilt. Many buildings run on cistern water, so drink bottled, and pack reef-safe sunscreen: the territory bans sunscreens containing oxybenzone.
