Surabaya is Indonesia's second-largest city and the capital of East Java, a hot, busy port that most travellers treat as a stopover on the way to Mount Bromo and Ijen, though its old quarters deserve a day or two. The city comes in layers: Dutch colonial warehouses around the Red Bridge, the Arab quarter gathered around the 15th-century Ampel Mosque, and a Chinatown along Kembang Jepun. Locals call it the City of Heroes, after the battle of November 1945 that is commemorated every year on Heroes' Day, and they will happily steer you towards a bowl of rawon, the black beef soup the city is known for.
When to go
Surabaya is hot and humid all year, with highs above 30°C almost every day. The dry season, roughly May to October, is the best time both for the city and for the volcano trips, with clear dawn skies at Bromo; the wet season, November to April, brings heavy afternoon storms and occasional street flooding. Pack warm layers whatever the month: at sunrise on the Bromo rim and at Ijen the temperature can drop close to freezing, especially in July and August. Ramadan moves each year, and the Eid holiday that follows fills trains, planes and highways across Java for about a week.
Getting there from Montreal
There is no nonstop from Eastern Canada, and Surabaya usually takes two or more connections. From Montreal (YUL) the common routings go through a European, Gulf or East Asian hub, then Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta into Juanda International Airport; from Quebec City (YQB) add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto. Expect well over a day of travel each way. Bali is about an hour's flight away, and the overland route of Surabaya, Bromo, Ijen, then the ferry from Banyuwangi to Bali is a popular way to combine the two. Juanda sits south of the city in Sidoarjo, and a taxi or Grab ride into the centre takes 45 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic.
What to see and do
- House of Sampoerna and the colonial old town around the Red Bridge
- Ampel Mosque and the Arab quarter market
- Heroes Monument and the 10 November Museum
- Sunrise over Mount Bromo and the Sea of Sand
- The blue fire and acid lake of the Ijen crater
Good to know before you go
Grab and Gojek are how most people get around, for both cars and cheap motorbike taxis, with metered Bluebird taxis as a reliable alternative, and Suroboyo Bus city buses run the main corridors. For trips out of town, trains leave Gubeng and Pasar Turi stations for Malang and Probolinggo (the usual jumping-off points for Bromo), Banyuwangi (for Ijen) and the rest of Java, and Bromo and Ijen are easiest on a multi-day tour with a driver. The currency is the Indonesian rupiah; malls and hotels take cards, but small eateries (warung) want cash and ATMs are everywhere. Indonesian and Javanese are spoken, English much less than in Bali, so a translation app helps. Do not drink tap water, use your right hand to give and receive, and dress modestly at Ampel Mosque, where women should cover their hair; at Ijen, wear a proper gas mask, and check before you set out whether either volcano is closed to visitors.
Entry requirements and health
Visa on arrival or e-Visa
A visa is needed, and the easy part is you can usually get it right on arrival or online beforehand. Bring the fee and the right papers and you're set.
Vaccines and health
Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water. Malaria is present in some areas, so ask a clinic whether antimalarials make sense for your route.
