Savannah is Georgia's oldest city, laid out in 1733 on a grid of leafy public squares that still gives the historic district its shape. Live oaks hung with Spanish moss shade the squares, the old cotton warehouses along the river now hold restaurants and shops on cobbled River Street, and the white fountain in Forsyth Park anchors the south end. It is a city for slow walking, one square at a time, with plenty of Lowcountry cooking along the way.

When to go

Spring, from March to May, is the classic season, with azaleas in bloom and warm, comfortable days; mid-March also brings St. Patrick's Day, one of the largest celebrations of it in the United States, when the city fills up and rooms are hard to find. Summers are hot and very humid, with afternoon thunderstorms, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November. October and November offer mild days and smaller crowds, and winters are cool but rarely cold. Biting sand gnats are active near the marshes in spring and summer, so pack repellent.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There is no nonstop from Quebec. From Montreal (YUL), Savannah/Hilton Head International is usually one connection away, often through Atlanta, Charlotte, New York or Washington; from Quebec City (YQB), expect one or two. With US preclearance at Montreal and Toronto, you clear customs before boarding and arrive as a domestic passenger, and Canadians need a passport but no visa. The airport is about 20 minutes from the historic district by taxi, Uber or Lyft.

What to see and do

  • A walk from square to square, from Forsyth Park to River Street
  • Bonaventure Cemetery and its oak-shaded Victorian monuments
  • The avenue of live oaks at Wormsloe Historic Site
  • Tybee Island's beach and lighthouse
  • Lowcountry cooking: shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes and pralines

Good to know before you go

The historic district is best seen on foot, a free shuttle loops through it, and the free Savannah Belles Ferry crosses the river to Hutchinson Island. For Bonaventure, Wormsloe or Tybee Island, about 30 minutes east of downtown, use Uber, Lyft or a taxi, or join a tour. The currency is the US dollar, cards are accepted nearly everywhere, and restaurant tips run 18 to 20 percent. Within the historic district you may walk with a drink in a plastic to-go cup, but not in glass or a can. Canadian phone plans usually need a US roaming add-on, so set one up or buy an eSIM before you leave.
