Siem Reap is the riverside town that serves as the gateway to Angkor, the vast ruined capital of the Khmer Empire spread through the forest just north of town. Most days start before dawn with a tuk-tuk ride out to Angkor Wat and end around the Old Market and Pub Street, over fish amok or a show at Phare, the Cambodian Circus. In between come giant stone faces, galleries carved with battle scenes, and jungle roots prying old walls apart.
When to go
November to February is the peak: dry, sunny and as cool as it gets, which still means hot afternoons, and the temples are at their busiest. March to May is very hot, with April the toughest month for temple walking. The rainy season, roughly May to October, brings short afternoon storms, full moats, green forest and far smaller crowds, and the Tonle Sap lake swells to several times its dry-season size. In any season, start early and take the midday hours off.
Getting there from Montreal
There is no nonstop from Canada, so plan on two connections. From Montreal (YUL) the common routings go via Vancouver or Toronto to an Asian hub such as Bangkok, Singapore or Ho Chi Minh City; from Quebec City (YQB) add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. Flights land at Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (SAI), about 40 to 50 km from town, so the transfer takes about an hour by taxi, hotel shuttle or ride-hailing. Phnom Penh is a short domestic flight away, or five to six hours by bus.
What to see and do
- Sunrise over Angkor Wat
- The stone faces of the Bayon in Angkor Thom
- Ta Prohm, gripped by giant tree roots
- The carved pink sandstone of Banteay Srei
- The floating villages of the Tonle Sap
Good to know before you go
The classic way to see the temples is with a tuk-tuk driver hired for the day, who waits at each stop; around town, PassApp and Grab fix the price up front. You need an Angkor Pass, sold for one, three or seven days at the official ticket centre and online, and a guide on the first day helps make sense of the carvings. US dollars and Cambodian riel are both used, and damaged dollar bills are often refused. Canadians need a visa for Cambodia, which can be arranged online as an e-visa; check the current rules before you fly. Carry plenty of bottled water into the park, and cover shoulders and knees, which is checked at the upper level of Angkor Wat.
