Phnom Penh sits where the Tonle Sap river meets the Mekong, a fast-growing capital of gilded pagodas, French-era villas and riverside boulevards. The golden roofs of the Royal Palace face the water along Sisowath Quay, the yellow Art Deco dome of the Central Market anchors the old commercial quarter, and street stalls serve kuy teav noodle soup from early morning. The genocide memorials at Tuol Sleng and Choeung Ek are a sobering and essential part of any visit, and a sunset boat on the Mekong is the gentlest way to end a day here.
When to go
The cool, dry months from November to February are the most comfortable. March to May grows very hot, peaking in April around Khmer New Year, when much of the city heads home to the provinces. The rainy season, roughly May to October, brings heavy afternoon downpours and occasional street flooding, though mornings are often clear. The Water Festival, with boat races on the river, usually falls in October or November.
Getting there from Quebec City
There is no nonstop from Canada, so expect two connections. From Montreal (YUL) the usual routings go via Vancouver or Toronto to an Asian hub such as Seoul, Taipei, Bangkok or Singapore; from Quebec City (YQB) add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. Flights now land at Techo International Airport (KTI), the city's new airport to the south, which replaced the old Phnom Penh airport (PNH). Allow up to an hour into the centre by taxi or ride-hailing, more at rush hour.
What to see and do
- The Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda
- The National Museum of Cambodia
- Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Choeung Ek memorial

Good to know before you go
Tuk-tuks are the classic ride, and the PassApp and Grab apps fix the price before you set off, for tuk-tuks, smaller auto-rickshaws and cars alike. The US dollar circulates alongside the Cambodian riel: ATMs usually dispense dollars, small change comes back in riel, and torn notes are often refused. Canadians need a visa for Cambodia, which can be arranged online as an e-visa; check the current rules before you fly. English is common in hotels and cafés, tap water is not for drinking, and shoulders and knees must be covered at the Royal Palace and pagodas. Keep your phone and bag away from the street side, since snatch thefts by passing motorbikes do happen.
