Flights from Montreal (YUL) to Salalah, Oman

Here is what to know before booking a flight to Salalah from Montreal.

From Montreal, fares to Salalah usually run between $1850 and $2400. The best fare spotted recently is $2038.

Salalah is Oman's tropical surprise. Every summer the khareef monsoon sweeps in off the Indian Ocean and turns the Dhofar hills a startling, misty green, with waterfalls and grazing camels straight out of a fairy tale. The rest of the year it is all golden beaches, turquoise sea, and the ancient scent of frankincense, the resin that made this coast rich for millennia. Explore hidden wadis, sleepy fishing towns, and a corner of Arabia few travelers ever reach!

When to go

Salalah has two very different faces. The khareef monsoon, roughly late June to early September, brings cool mist, drizzle, and lush green hills, plus big crowds of Gulf visitors escaping the heat. The rest of the year, October to May, is hot, dry, and sunny, ideal for beaches and wadis with far fewer people. Choose the khareef for the famous green landscapes, or winter for clear skies and warm swimming.

Getting there from Montreal

There is no nonstop from Quebec. From Quebec City (YQB) connect through Montreal (YUL) or Toronto, then a European hub such as London or Frankfurt, or a Gulf hub like Doha, Dubai, or Abu Dhabi, then on to Muscat and a short domestic flight to Salalah. Oman Air handles much of the final leg. Expect well over a day of travel with long layovers, and a time difference of about eight hours ahead of Quebec.

What to see and do

  • The green, misty Dhofar hills during the khareef monsoon
  • Frankincense trees and the UNESCO Land of Frankincense sites
  • Empty golden beaches along the Arabian Sea
  • Freshwater wadis and springs like Wadi Darbat

Good to know before you go

Getting around is easiest with taxis, a hired car with driver, or the Otaxi app, since public transit is very limited and sights are spread out; arranging a driver for a day is a common, relaxed way to see the wadis and beaches. The currency is the Omani rial, a high-value note, so keep smaller change handy. Arabic is the language, but English is common in tourism. Omanis are warm and courteous, so dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, especially away from resorts, and carry bottled water on longer outings.
