Sharm El-Sheikh sits at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, where the desert mountains drop straight into some of the Red Sea's most famous coral. The resort town is built for sun, snorkelling, and easy diving, with a marine national park just offshore. Fin out over the reef wall and watch it plunge into deep blue!

When to go

Spring and autumn, roughly March to May and September to November, bring warm water and comfortable air. Summer is very hot from June to August, though the sea stays superb and the diving carries on. Winter days are mild and sunny but evenings turn cool, so pack a layer.

Getting there from Montreal

There is no nonstop from Québec City or Montréal, so expect an overnight Atlantic crossing with a connection. Common routings go through a European hub like Istanbul, Frankfurt, or Paris, or a Gulf hub such as Doha or Dubai, then on to Sharm. Seasonal charters and packages via Europe can make the winter trip simpler.

What to see and do

Good to know before you go

The currency is the Egyptian pound, and cash is useful for markets and tips. Uber and Careem run mainly in Cairo, so in Sharm you will use hotel shuttles and local taxis; settle the fare before setting off, as meters are uncommon. Arabic is the language and English is widely understood in resorts; the tourist zones are easygoing, but dress modestly off the beach and keep an eye on your belongings in busy markets.

Entry requirements and health

Visa on arrival or e-Visa

A visa is needed, and the easy part is you can usually get it right on arrival or online beforehand. Bring the fee and the right papers and you're set.

Vaccines and health

Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water. Yellow fever proof only comes into play if you're arriving from a country that has it.
