When to go

Sal is warm and dry nearly all year, with sunshine and constant breezes that keep the heat comfortable. November to June is the driest and windiest stretch, ideal for beaches and water sports, while the kite season peaks in the windier months. A short, light rainy spell can appear around August and September, but downpours are rare.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There are no nonstop flights from Québec City or Montréal, so plan a connection, most often through Lisbon or another European hub. The Atlantic crossing is usually flown overnight before the onward leg out to the islands. Amilcar Cabral International Airport is on Sal itself, roughly 15 to 20 minutes from the beach town of Santa Maria.

Good to know before you go

The currency is the Cape Verdean escudo, and while euros are often accepted, carry cash for smaller places and taxis. Getting around is done by taxis and shared aluguer vans that run set routes between towns, and there is no major ride-hailing app, so agree on a taxi fare before you set off; renting a scooter or a buggy is popular for exploring the island at your own pace. Portuguese is official, with Cape Verdean Creole spoken everywhere and some English and French around the resorts. Sal is laid-back and safe by most standards, but use sun protection against the strong sun and wind, and keep an eye on belongings on busy beaches.
