Puerto Montt is where Chile's central valley reaches the sea, a port on the Reloncaví Sound that marks the start of the Carretera Austral and the jumping-off point for the Lakes District and Chiloé. The city is practical and often rainy, best tasted at Angelmó, the waterfront market where cooks serve curanto, a heaping pot of shellfish, smoked meats and potato dumplings. Within about an hour lie Puerto Varas on Lake Llanquihue, facing the snowy cone of the Osorno volcano, and the ferry to Chiloé, an island of wooden churches and houses on stilts.
When to go
This corner of Chile is green because it rains a lot, in any month. Summer, December to March, is the driest and warmest stretch, with long days around 20°C, the clearest volcano views, and boat trips and penguin tours in full swing. Winter, June to August, is cold and very wet, though the Osorno volcano opens for skiing. Spring and autumn bring fewer visitors and changeable weather.
Getting there from Montreal
There is no nonstop from Canada, and the usual routing goes through Santiago. From Montreal (YUL), expect one connection to reach Santiago, through Toronto or a US or Latin American hub, then a domestic flight of under two hours; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. El Tepual Airport is about 25 minutes west of the city, with shuttles into town or straight to Puerto Varas. The port is also the starting point for multi-day ferry trips south through the Patagonian fjords.
What to see and do
- Curanto and crafts at the Angelmó market
- Puerto Varas and the shores of Lake Llanquihue
- Petrohué falls and Lago Todos los Santos below the Osorno volcano
- Frutillar's German-era houses and lakeside Teatro del Lago
- Palafitos and UNESCO-listed wooden churches on Chiloé
- Penguin-watching boats at Puñihuil, near Ancud
Good to know before you go
In the city, micros (local buses) and colectivos (shared taxis on fixed routes) are cheap, and Uber also operates. Minibuses to Puerto Varas and Frutillar leave constantly from the waterfront bus terminal, and buses to Chiloé ride the ferry across the Chacao channel; for Petrohué and the Osorno volcano, a day tour or the minibus from Puerto Varas beats driving. Chile uses the peso and cards are widely accepted, though colectivos and market stalls want cash. Spanish is spoken fast and full of slang. Tap water is safe. Pack a real rain jacket in any season, and buy shellfish from busy, established stalls.
