Punta del Este is Uruguay's summer capital, a narrow peninsula about two hours east of Montevideo where the calm Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic surf. In January its beaches, harbour and Avenida Gorlero fill with Argentine, Brazilian and Uruguayan holidaymakers; the rest of the year it is a quiet seaside town, with sea lions waiting beside the fish stalls at the port. Along the coast are the whitewashed cliffside Casapueblo at Punta Ballena, the wave-shaped bridge at La Barra and the sandy lanes of José Ignacio.

When to go

High season runs from late December through February and peaks in early January, with warm sunny days, nightlife until dawn and steep prices. December and March are the sweet spot: beach weather, thinner crowds and most restaurants still open. From April to November many businesses close or cut their hours, and days turn cool, windy and damp, especially from June to August. Southern right whales pass along the coast roughly from July to November and can sometimes be seen from shore.

Getting there from Montreal

Laguna del Sauce Airport (PDP), about 20 km west of the peninsula, has few flights, mostly seasonal from Buenos Aires or São Paulo. Most visitors fly into Montevideo and take a two-hour coach along the coast. From Montreal (YUL), reaching Montevideo takes one or two connections, through Toronto, a US hub, Panama City, São Paulo or Buenos Aires; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. You can also fly into Buenos Aires and cross the Río de la Plata by ferry to Montevideo or Colonia.

Good to know before you go

The peninsula is easy on foot or by bike, and local buses link Punta del Este with Maldonado, Punta Ballena, La Barra and José Ignacio; taxis are plentiful and Uber also operates. The currency is the Uruguayan peso, though many hotels and rentals quote in US dollars, and cards are accepted almost everywhere. Spanish is the language, and mate thermoses are everywhere. Tap water is safe to drink. Swim at Playa Mansa for calm water, follow the lifeguard flags on Playa Brava, where currents can be strong, and expect late dinners, since restaurants fill after 9 p.m. in summer.
