Puerto Madryn is a seaside city on the Golfo Nuevo, founded in 1865 by Welsh settlers and today one of Argentina's best bases for marine wildlife. Across the bay, the UNESCO-listed Península Valdés shelters southern right whales that come to mate and calve, along with sea lions, elephant seals and the orcas of Punta Norte, which surge onto the beach to hunt. A few hours south, Punta Tombo is one of the largest Magellanic penguin colonies on the continent, and the Welsh tea houses of Gaiman make an easy afternoon trip.

When to go

Timing depends on the animals. Southern right whales are in the gulfs from about June to December, most reliably September to November; penguins are at Punta Tombo from around September to April; orcas hunt at Punta Norte mostly around March and April, with no guarantee. October and November overlap whales, penguins and elephant seals, which makes them the best all-round months. The climate is dry and windy, with warm summers and cool winters.

Getting there from Montreal

Plan on at least two connections. From Montreal (YUL), you first fly to Buenos Aires, usually through a US hub, Toronto, Panama City or São Paulo; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. International flights land at Ezeiza (EZE), while most domestic flights south leave from Aeroparque (AEP), so allow time to cross the city. Madryn's own airport has limited service, and many travellers land at Trelew (REL), about an hour south, with shuttles to town.

Madryn's centre and beachfront are walkable, and taxis and remises cover the rest; ride-hailing is limited. Península Valdés and Punta Tombo are long trips on partly gravel roads, so most visitors join a day tour with a guide who knows where the animals are that week; whale boats leave from Puerto Pirámides. Argentina uses the peso, and exchange rules have shifted often, so check the current situation and bring some US dollars in clean notes; cards work in hotels and restaurants. Spanish is the language. Tap water is generally fine. Keep your distance from penguins and seals, and pack sunscreen and a windbreaker: UV is high in spring and summer and the wind rarely lets up.
