Little Cayman is the smallest and quietest of the three Cayman Islands, a flat strip of mangroves, salt ponds and beach about 16 kilometres long, home to only a couple of hundred residents. It is one of the Caribbean's most celebrated dive destinations thanks to Bloody Bay Wall, where the reef drops from a few metres of water into depths of more than a thousand, and the island's handful of lodges are built around dive boats that reach it in minutes. On land the pace is slow enough that road signs remind drivers that rock iguanas have the right of way, and red-footed boobies nest by the thousands around Booby Pond.

When to go

Little Cayman is warm year-round, and the driest months run from about December to April. Winter cold fronts can push swell onto the north shore and close Bloody Bay for a day or two, when dive boats switch to sites on the sheltered south side. Summer usually brings the calmest seas and warmest water, though it overlaps with hurricane season (June to November, peaking from August to October), and some lodges close for a few weeks in the autumn.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

Getting here takes at least three flights. First reach Grand Cayman (GCM): from Montreal (YUL) that usually means one connection through Toronto or a US hub such as Miami or Charlotte, and from Quebec City (YQB) usually two. From Grand Cayman, small propeller planes fly to Little Cayman's airstrip in under an hour, often stopping at Cayman Brac on the way. Schedules do not always line up with international arrivals, so a night in Grand Cayman is sometimes needed, and baggage limits on the small planes are tight, which matters if you bring your own dive gear. Lodges meet guests at the airstrip.

What to see and do

  • Wall dives and snorkelling along Bloody Bay Wall and Jackson Point
  • The red-footed booby colony at Booby Pond Nature Reserve
  • Paddling out to Owen Island and the beach at Point of Sand

Good to know before you go

Little Cayman is small and flat, and most visitors get around by bicycle, which lodges usually provide; there are no buses or ride-hailing services and taxis are few, so your lodge handles airstrip pickups and dive boats collect you from its dock. The Cayman Islands dollar is the currency, US dollars are accepted everywhere, and cards work at the lodges, but bring some cash from Grand Cayman since services on the island are limited. English is spoken and traffic, what little there is, drives on the left. Drink the bottled or filtered water your lodge provides. Plan a full day without diving before your flight out, as dive-safety guidelines recommend, and never touch the coral or feed the iguanas.
