Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan, the walled Pink City founded by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1727 and laid out on a grid that still shapes its bazaars. The old city was painted terracotta pink to welcome the Prince of Wales in 1876, and the colour has stuck; the walled city is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Forts crown the surrounding ridges, and with Delhi and Agra the city forms the Golden Triangle, which puts it on almost every first trip to India.

When to go

October to March is the season, with warm, sunny days and cool nights, Diwali lighting up the bazaars in October or November and kites filling the sky for Makar Sankranti in mid-January. The Jaipur Literature Festival takes over the city in late January, so book ahead. April to June is fierce, with afternoons above 40°C that make fort visits a dawn-only affair. The monsoon, July to September, brings moderate rain, green hills and fewer visitors.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There is no nonstop from Canada, so plan on two connections. From Montreal (YUL) the usual routing goes through a European or Gulf hub to Delhi or Mumbai, then a short domestic flight to Jaipur; from Quebec City (YQB) add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. Many travellers land in Delhi and cover the Golden Triangle by road or train instead, with Jaipur about five hours from Delhi. Jaipur's airport is in Sanganer, south of the city, 30 to 40 minutes from the old town.

What to see and do

  • Amber Fort and its mirrored Sheesh Mahal
  • The honeycomb facade of the Hawa Mahal
  • The City Palace, still partly a royal residence
  • The giant astronomical instruments of Jantar Mantar
  • Sunset from Nahargarh Fort
  • Jewellery, textiles and block prints in Johari and Bapu bazaars

Good to know before you go

Uber and Ola cover Jaipur well, including cheap auto-rickshaw rides; if you flag an auto on the street, agree on the fare first. For a day of forts, a driver hired through your hotel is easier than stringing together single rides, and you can walk or take a jeep up to Amber Fort. The currency is the Indian rupee; UPI phone payments are everywhere, foreign cards work in hotels and larger shops, and autos and small vendors want cash. Canadians need a visa for India, normally the e-Visa, but the rules for Canadian passport holders have changed in recent years, so check the current situation before booking. Drink bottled water, and expect to bargain in the bazaars, where the first price is an opening offer.

Entry requirements and health

e-Visa required

You'll need a visa for this one, but the whole thing is done online before you go. Apply a little ahead of your trip and travel with the approval in hand.

Vaccines and health

Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water. Malaria is present in some areas, so ask a clinic whether antimalarials make sense for your route.

General orientation for a Canadian passport on a short tourist trip, not legal or medical advice. Confirm with official sources, and see a travel health clinic four to six weeks before departure.
