Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang, in China's far northeast, a city that grew up around a Russian-built railway at the end of the 1800s and still shows it. Onion domes, Art Nouveau facades and the long cobblestone Central Street give the old Daoli district a look found nowhere else in China, and the food leans north too, from smoked red sausage to big Russian-style loaves. In winter the city cuts ice from the frozen Songhua River and builds lit-up castles, slides and whole streets for one of the largest ice festivals in the world.

When to go

Winter is the reason most people come, and it is serious: January nights regularly fall below -25°C and daytime highs rarely climb above -10°C. Ice and Snow World usually opens in late December and stays up into February while the cold holds, alongside the snow sculptures of Sun Island and the ice lanterns of Zhaolin Park. Summer is mild and green, in the mid-20s, with riverside beer gardens but no ice. The festival season can overlap with Chinese New Year, when trains and flights fill up across the country.

Getting there from Montreal

There is no nonstop from Canada, and Harbin usually takes two connections. From Montreal (YUL) the common routing goes via Vancouver or Toronto to Beijing or Shanghai, then a domestic flight of two to three hours north, with Seoul as another option; from Quebec City (YQB) add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. High-speed trains also link Harbin with Beijing. Taiping International Airport is about 35 km southwest of the city, 45 minutes to an hour by taxi, DiDi or airport bus.

Good to know before you go

The metro is the easiest way across the city, and DiDi, which has an English version, and metered taxis cover the rest. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you leave home and link a foreign card, since nearly everyone pays by phone. Google, WhatsApp and many Western apps are blocked on Chinese networks, so sort out maps and messaging in advance, and check whether you need a visa, as China's entry rules for Canadians have shifted in recent years. English is rare, so keep your hotel's address in Chinese characters, and drink bottled or boiled water. Dress in proper layers with insulated boots and a neck warmer, and keep your phone in an inside pocket, as batteries drain fast in the cold.

Entry requirements and health

Visa required in advance

This one takes a bit more planning: you'll need a visa lined up ahead of time, usually through an embassy or consulate. Start early, since it can take a while.

Vaccines and health

Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water.
