Egilsstaðir is the main town of East Iceland, a quiet service town on the banks of Lagarfljót, a long glacier-fed lake said to hide a serpent, the Lagarfljót Worm. It is small and practical, with a geothermal pool, a few guesthouses and the region's airport, but it sits at the crossroads of the East Fjords, where steep roads drop to fishing villages like Seyðisfjörður and the land opens onto Iceland's largest forest, tall waterfalls and the country's only wild reindeer. This corner of Iceland sees a fraction of the south coast's visitors, so the trails are often yours alone.

When to go

Summer, from June to August, is the time to come: the days are long, the mountain passes are open, and the sheltered valleys around Egilsstaðir often get some of Iceland's warmest summer weather. Puffins nest on the islet of Hafnarhólmi at Borgarfjörður eystri from about late April to early August. Winter brings deep snow, short days and good odds for the northern lights, but storms can close the passes to the fjords, especially Fjarðarheiði above Seyðisfjörður, and many tours and guesthouses scale back. September offers autumn colour in the Hallormsstaður forest and quiet roads before the weather turns.

Getting there from Montreal

Reaching Egilsstaðir takes a long travel day. From Montreal (YUL) you can often fly nonstop to Keflavík (KEF), with the most choice in summer; from Quebec City (YQB) you first connect through Montreal, Toronto or a US hub such as Boston. The airport bus then takes about 45 minutes to Reykjavík's BSÍ terminal, a short taxi from the domestic airport, where flights of about an hour land at the edge of Egilsstaðir. By road it is about three hours from Akureyri, and the car ferry from Denmark via the Faroe Islands docks nearby at Seyðisfjörður.

What to see and do

  • The Hengifoss hike past the basalt columns of Litlanesfoss
  • Lagarfljót and Hallormsstaðaskógur, Iceland's largest forest
  • Seyðisfjörður, its painted houses and blue church
  • The basalt column canyon of Stuðlagil

Good to know before you go

Public transport is thin: local buses link Egilsstaðir with Seyðisfjörður and the fjord villages, and a Strætó route runs to Mývatn and Akureyri, but timetables are limited and some routes run only in summer. Taxis are few and must be booked ahead, so the realistic car-free option is a guided day tour to Stuðlagil, Hengifoss or the fjords, since the roads include gravel stretches and steep passes. The currency is the Icelandic króna and cards work almost everywhere, even at remote petrol stations. English is widely spoken and the tap water is excellent. Shower without a swimsuit before entering any pool, including the Vök Baths floating on Lake Urriðavatn, and in winter check safetravel.is before crossing a pass.
