Akureyri sits at the head of Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord, and is the main town of the north, often called the capital of the North. It is a place of timber houses, a pedestrian main street and a long stairway climbing to the twin towers of Akureyrarkirkja, and even the downtown traffic lights glow red in the shape of a heart. The town is small enough to walk in an afternoon, but it is the natural base for north Iceland's big sights: the horseshoe falls of Goðafoss, the lava fields and steaming vents around Lake Mývatn, and the whale-watching boats of Húsavík!
When to go
June to August is the main season: the sun barely sets in late June, temperatures usually sit in the low to mid teens with the odd warmer spell, and the north is often drier than Reykjavík. Whale-watching boats leave Húsavík from spring into autumn, with humpbacks the most common sighting in summer. From late September to March the dark returns and with it the northern lights, while the Hlíðarfjall ski area above town opens in winter; the trade-offs are short days, cold, and storms that can close mountain roads. September is a good compromise, with autumn colours, quieter trails and the first auroras.
Getting there from Montreal
There are no flights from Canada to Akureyri, so the trip runs through Keflavík (KEF). From Montreal (YUL) you can often fly nonstop to Keflavík, with the most choice in summer; from Quebec City (YQB) you first connect through Montreal, Toronto or a US hub such as Boston. The airport bus then takes about 45 minutes to Reykjavík's BSÍ terminal, a short taxi from the domestic airport, where flights of roughly 45 minutes leave for Akureyri. The alternative is the Ring Road, about five hours by car or most of a day by Strætó bus, and winter weather can close its mountain passes.

Good to know before you go
Akureyri's town buses are free and the centre is walkable, with taxis for anything else; Uber does not operate in Iceland. Strætó's regional buses reach Húsavík and Mývatn on a limited timetable, so most visitors without a car book day tours from Akureyri, usually with hotel pickup. The currency is the Icelandic króna, but cards work almost everywhere, even for a coffee. English is widely spoken and the tap water is excellent. Icelanders expect you to shower without a swimsuit before entering any geothermal pool, and in winter check safetravel.is and road conditions before leaving town.
