Key West is the last island on the Overseas Highway, a small, sun-bleached town at the very end of the Florida Keys and closer to Havana than to Miami. Its Old Town is a grid of wooden conch houses, tin roofs and banyan shade, with roosters wandering the sidewalks and Duval Street running from one shore of the island to the other. The day builds toward one ritual: the crowd that gathers at Mallory Square each evening to watch the sun drop into the water!

When to go

December to April is the dry season and the high season, with sunny days around 25°C, calmer seas for the boat to the Dry Tortugas, and the highest hotel demand; March adds the US spring-break crowds. From June to October it is hot and humid with short, heavy afternoon storms, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking from August to October, when a storm can close the Overseas Highway and the airport. Late October brings Fantasy Fest, an adults-oriented costume festival that fills every room in town, so book far ahead or avoid those dates.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

Key West's airport is small, so from Montreal (YUL) you usually connect once through Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte or another US hub, and from Quebec City (YQB) you should expect one or two connections. US preclearance in Montreal and Toronto means you clear American customs before boarding, and Canadians need a passport but no visa. Many travellers instead fly into Miami and ride the Overseas Highway south across its 42 bridges, about four hours by intercity bus or shuttle. The airport is about 10 minutes from Old Town by taxi.

What to see and do

  • Sunset at Mallory Square and its street performers
  • Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park, by ferry or seaplane
  • The Ernest Hemingway Home and its six-toed cats
  • Snorkelling the coral reef offshore
  • Old Town's conch houses by bike, from Duval Street to the Southernmost Point buoy
  • Key lime pie, conch fritters and Cuban coffee

Good to know before you go

Old Town is small and flat, so most visitors walk or rent a bicycle, which is how plenty of locals get around too; the free Duval Loop bus circles downtown, and taxis, Uber and Lyft handle trips to the airport and the beaches. Parking is scarce and expensive, one more reason to skip a car entirely. The currency is the US dollar, cards are accepted nearly everywhere, and tipping 18 to 20 percent is standard in bars and restaurants. Tap water is safe to drink. The reef lies inside a protected marine sanctuary: use reef-safe sunscreen, never stand on or touch the coral, and reserve Dry Tortugas ferry seats well ahead, since daily capacity is limited.
