Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city and its great port, a maritime city of canals, bridges and red-brick warehouses on the River Elbe, with two lakes, the Binnenalster and the Außenalster, right in the centre. Container ships slide past the piers at Landungsbrücken, the Speicherstadt warehouse district is reflected in its canals, and the wave-roofed Elbphilharmonie concert hall rises from an old quay at the tip of HafenCity. The Sunday-morning fish market, the St. Pauli streets where the Beatles played their early shows and the public ferries across the harbour make it easy to fill whole days by the water!

When to go

Hamburg has a mild maritime climate with frequent cloud and drizzle in every season, so bring a rain jacket whatever the month. May to September is the best stretch, with long evenings by the Alster, beach bars along the Elbe and the port's birthday festival, the Hafengeburtstag, in May. Winter is grey, damp and dark by mid-afternoon, but from late November the Christmas markets, starting with the one at the Rathaus, light up the centre. Spring and autumn are cool and quieter, good for museums and concerts.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There are no nonstop flights from Quebec City or Montreal to Hamburg, so expect one connection from Montreal (YUL), typically through Frankfurt, Munich, Paris, Amsterdam or London, and two from Quebec City (YQB), which adds a first leg via Montreal or Toronto. Hamburg Airport is about 10 km north of the centre, and the S1 suburban train reaches the Hauptbahnhof in about 25 minutes. You can also fly into Frankfurt or Berlin and finish the trip on an ICE high-speed train.

Good to know before you go

The HVV network covers the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses and harbour ferries on a single ticket, sold in the HVV app or at machines, and Germany's Deutschlandticket monthly pass is valid on all of it. Uber and FREENOW cover taxis, MOIA runs shared electric rides, and shared e-scooters and StadtRAD bikes are everywhere; on foot, keep out of the red bike lanes, where cyclists move fast. The currency is the euro; cards work in most places, but some bakeries, kiosks and small bars still prefer cash. German is the language and English is widely spoken. Most shops close on Sundays, bottles and cans carry a deposit (Pfand) refunded at supermarket machines, and the tap water is excellent.
