Cairns is the easygoing tropical gateway to far north Queensland, a small waterfront city where the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest sit within a morning's travel of each other. Days start early here: boats leave the marina for the outer reef, the scenic railway and cableway climb into the hills at Kuranda, and the saltwater lagoon on the Esplanade fills up the moment the heat sets in. Compact, warm, and built around getting you outdoors, Cairns is the kind of base you barely spend time in!
When to go
Seasons are reversed south of the equator, and the tropics split the year in two. The dry season, from May to October, is the reason most people come: warm days, low humidity, calm water, and the best reef visibility. The wet season, November to April, is hotter and sticky, with heavy afternoon downpours and the occasional cyclone, though the rainforest is at its greenest and prices drop. Box jellyfish season runs roughly November to May, when swimming outside stinger nets calls for a full-body suit.
Getting there from Montreal
There is no nonstop from Eastern Canada; this is one of the longest trips you can book. From Quebec City (YQB) you connect through Toronto or Vancouver, cross the Pacific to Sydney, Brisbane, or Melbourne, then take a domestic hop of two to three hours up to Cairns. From Montreal (YUL) the routing is much the same, usually via a Canadian or US west coast hub and then an Australian gateway. Expect two or more connections and well over a full day in transit, plus a time difference big enough to plan a recovery day around.
What to see and do
- Outer Great Barrier Reef snorkel and dive trips
- The Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation
- Kuranda by scenic railway and Skyrail cableway
- The Esplanade Lagoon and waterfront boardwalk
Good to know before you go
Central Cairns is walkable and the Sunbus network covers the northern beaches and Palm Cove, with Uber, DiDi, Ola, and taxis filling the gaps; reef and Daintree operators nearly all include hotel pickup, so you rarely need your own wheels. The currency is the Australian dollar, cards work almost everywhere, English is spoken, and tap water is safe. Traffic drives on the left. The UV index here is extreme even on cloudy days, so reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard are worth packing, and never swim in rivers or estuaries: this is crocodile country and the signs mean it.
