Tromsø lies some 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, a small city spread across an island between snow-capped mountains and deep fjords, and it is one of the most reliable places in the world to see the northern lights. Its wooden houses, harbourfront museums and lively main street, Storgata, give it more city life than you would expect this far north, and the triangular Arctic Cathedral across the bridge has become its symbol. In winter the days turn short and blue and the nights belong to the aurora; in summer the sun does not set at all.

When to go

The aurora season runs from about September to early April, whenever the sky is dark and clear. The polar night, when the sun stays below the horizon, lasts from late November to mid-January, though there are still a few hours of blue twilight around midday, and from roughly late May to late July the midnight sun means round-the-clock daylight for hiking, kayaking and fjord trips. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, winters are milder than in inland Scandinavia, usually hovering just below freezing, but snow is plentiful and the weather changes quickly. January brings the Tromsø International Film Festival, and early February the Sámi Week, with reindeer races on the main street.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There are no flights from Canada to Tromsø, so plan on two connections from Montreal (YUL): a transatlantic flight to a European hub, then on to Oslo and a domestic flight of about two hours north. From Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg via Montreal or Toronto. In winter, some European hubs add direct seasonal flights to Tromsø, which can save a stop. The airport is about 5 km from the centre, a short ride by airport bus, city bus or taxi.

What to see and do

  • A guided northern lights chase to wherever the sky is clear
  • The Fjellheisen cable car up Mount Storsteinen
  • The Arctic Cathedral in Tromsdalen
  • Winter boat trips to see orcas and humpback whales
  • Dog sledding and reindeer visits with Sámi herders

Good to know before you go

The centre is compact and walkable, and city buses cover the island and the mainland side, with tickets easiest to buy in the regional transit app. Taxis are expensive and ride-hailing is scarce, so book aurora, whale and dog-sledding tours with pickup, and leave the icy, dark winter roads to local drivers. The currency is the Norwegian krone, but Norway is close to cashless and cards are taken for even small purchases. English is spoken almost everywhere and the tap water is excellent. Pack ice grips for your boots, and note that supermarkets stop selling beer at 8 pm on weekdays and 6 pm on Saturdays, while wine and spirits are sold only at the state-run Vinmonopolet stores.
