Sochi is Russia's main Black Sea resort, a long subtropical strip of pebble beaches, palm-lined promenades and sanatoriums squeezed between the sea and the forested foothills of the Caucasus. It hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics, which left a cluster of stadiums in Adler and a modern ski area at Krasnaya Polyana, about an hour inland, where Russians come to ski in winter and hike in summer. Palm trees on the coast and snow on the peaks in the same view are its main draw.

When to go

The coast has a humid subtropical climate. July and August are hot and sticky, with the warmest sea and the biggest crowds of domestic holidaymakers, while June and September offer warm water with fewer people. Coastal winters are mild and damp and rarely freezing, while the ski season at Krasnaya Polyana runs roughly from December to April. Spring and autumn suit hiking in the mountains and walks through the parks and gardens.

Getting there from Montreal

Sochi is very hard to reach from Canada at present. Under sanctions there are no direct flights between Canada and Russia, so from Quebec City (YQB) or Montreal (YUL) you must connect through a third country, for example via Istanbul, Dubai or Yerevan, sometimes with a further change in Moscow, for two or three connections in total. Canadians need a Russian visa, and many travel insurance policies exclude Russia. Before booking anything, read the Government of Canada's travel advice for Russia at travel.gc.ca. Sochi's airport is in Adler, about 30 km south of the city centre, linked to it by suburban trains and taxis.

What to see and do

  • The ski slopes and summer trails of Krasnaya Polyana
  • Olympic Park and the seafront at Adler
  • The Dendrarium botanical garden and the seaside promenade

Good to know before you go

Suburban Lastochka trains run along the coast and up to Krasnaya Polyana, city buses cover the rest, and Yandex Go is the standard app for taxis. The currency is the rouble, and Western Visa and Mastercard cards do not work in Russia because of sanctions, with Apple Pay and Google Pay unavailable too, so bring enough cash in euros or US dollars, in clean recent notes, to exchange locally. Russian is the language and English is limited outside large hotels, so download an offline translation app. Carry your passport at all times, since foreigners must be registered with the authorities (hotels usually handle this), and drink bottled or filtered water rather than tap water.

Entry requirements and health

Visa required in advance

This one takes a bit more planning: you'll need a visa lined up ahead of time, usually through an embassy or consulate. Start early, since it can take a while.

General orientation for a Canadian passport on a short tourist trip, not legal or medical advice. Confirm with official sources, and see a travel health clinic four to six weeks before departure.
