Salzburg is a baroque city on the Salzach River, framed by wooded hills and crowned by Hohensalzburg, one of the largest fully preserved medieval castles in Europe. Mozart was born here in 1756, in a yellow house on Getreidegasse, and music still sets the city's calendar, from the summer festival to the concerts held in its churches and palace halls. The old town is compact enough to explore on foot in a day, and the lakes and mountains of the Salzkammergut begin just beyond it.

When to go

Summer, from June to August, brings warm days, busy beer gardens and the Salzburg Festival, which fills the city with opera and concerts from late July through August, along with crowds and higher hotel rates. Salzburg is also one of Austria's rainiest cities, known for its steady drizzle, so pack a rain jacket in any season. From late November, Christmas markets fill the Domplatz and the Residenzplatz, and winter opens day trips to the ski areas of the surrounding province. May, June, September and October give the best balance of weather and crowds.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There are no nonstop flights from Canada, so from Montreal (YUL) you usually connect once through a hub such as Frankfurt, Vienna, Zurich or Amsterdam, and from Quebec City (YQB) you add a first leg via Montreal or Toronto. Many travellers fly into Munich instead and take the train from Munich's main station, about an hour and a half to two hours, or into Vienna, roughly two and a half hours away by train. Salzburg's airport is only about 4 km from the old town, and trolleybuses run to the centre and the main station in around 20 minutes.

What to see and do

  • The old town, Getreidegasse and Mozart's Birthplace
  • Hohensalzburg Fortress by funicular
  • The Mirabell Gardens
  • The trick fountains of Hellbrunn Palace
  • A day trip to the Eisriesenwelt ice cave at Werfen

Good to know before you go

The old town is best on foot, and the city's trolleybuses and buses cover everything else, with tickets from machines or the transit app; the Salzburg Card bundles public transport with entry to most sights. Taxis wait at the main station and around the old town, and the flat paths along the Salzach make cycling easy. Regional trains and Postbus coaches reach the lakes, the salt mine at Hallein and the ice cave at Werfen without a car. The currency is the euro; cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for beer halls, market stalls and smaller cafés. German is the language, with Grüß Gott as the everyday greeting, English is widely understood, the tap water is excellent, and most shops close on Sundays.
