Lilongwe is Malawi's capital, a green, spread-out city divided into numbered sectors called Areas, with a lively Old Town of markets and craft stalls and a quieter government quarter of jacaranda-lined avenues. Few people come for the city alone, but it is a relaxed place to land, change money and get your bearings before heading east to Lake Malawi, a freshwater lake nearly 600 kilometres long and lined with sandy beaches. Give the city a day for the market and the wildlife sanctuary, then follow the road down to the water.
When to go
Lilongwe sits on a plateau at about 1,000 metres, so it stays milder than the lakeshore. The dry season runs from May to October: May to August is cool and sunny, ideal for the lake and for safaris, while September and October turn hot and dusty, just as the jacarandas bloom. The rains arrive around November or December and last until April, bringing heavy storms, green hills, some impassable rural roads and a higher malaria risk.
Getting there from Quebec City
There are no nonstop flights from Canada, and the trip usually involves two connections. From Montreal (YUL), you typically cross the Atlantic to a European hub and continue through Addis Ababa, Nairobi or Johannesburg to Lilongwe; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto. Kamuzu International Airport is about 25 kilometres north of the city, around half an hour by taxi, and it is best to have your hotel arrange the pickup if you land late. The lake is a few more hours by road: Senga Bay is the closest beach, about two hours away, and Cape Maclear takes four or more.
What to see and do
- The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, a sanctuary for rescued animals
- The Old Town market and its craft stalls
- Snorkelling among cichlids at Cape Maclear, in Lake Malawi National Park
Good to know before you go
Lilongwe is too spread out to walk between Areas, and its crowded minibuses are hard to decipher at first, so most visitors use taxis booked through their hotel or a trusted driver; there are no meters, so agree on the fare first. Bicycle and motorbike taxis handle short hops, and for the lake most travellers take a long-distance bus or hire a private driver. The currency is the Malawian kwacha: cash rules outside the larger hotels, and city ATMs accept Visa more readily than Mastercard. English is an official language and widely spoken alongside Chichewa; drink bottled or treated water, take malaria precautions, and avoid walking alone after dark. Swimming in Lake Malawi carries a risk of bilharzia (schistosomiasis), so ask a travel clinic about screening after your trip.
