Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan, a city on the Volga where Tatar and Russian cultures have lived side by side for centuries. Inside the white walls of its Kremlin, the turquoise-domed Qolşärif Mosque stands a short walk from the Orthodox Annunciation Cathedral, and below the walls Bauman Street forms the pedestrian spine of the old centre. The wooden houses and old mosques of the Old Tatar Quarter keep an older, slower Kazan alive, and the food, from triangular echpochmak pastries to honey-soaked chak-chak, is a cuisine of its own.

When to go

Kazan has a continental climate with long, cold winters: January days often stay well below freezing, and snow covers the city from about November to March. Late May to early September is the best time to come, with warm days, boat trips on the Volga and the June Sabantuy festival of Tatar games, music and wrestling. Autumn turns cold quickly, and spring brings a slushy thaw in March and April.

Getting there from Montreal

Kazan is very hard to reach from Canada at present. Under sanctions there are no direct flights between Canada and Russia, so from Quebec City (YQB) or Montreal (YUL) you connect through a third country, for example via Istanbul or Dubai, sometimes with a further change in Moscow, for two or three connections in total; overnight trains from Moscow are another way in. Canadians need a Russian visa, and many travel insurance policies exclude Russia. Before booking anything, read the Government of Canada's travel advice for Russia at travel.gc.ca. Kazan's airport lies about 25 km south of the centre, roughly half an hour by taxi.

Good to know before you go

Kazan's single metro line, buses and trams cover the city, the centre is walkable, and Yandex Go is the standard taxi app. In summer, river boats run along the Volga to Sviyazhsk, a pleasant alternative to the road. The currency is the rouble, and Western Visa and Mastercard cards do not work in Russia because of sanctions, so bring enough cash in euros or US dollars, in clean recent notes, to exchange locally. Russian is spoken everywhere and Tatar widely, but English is limited, so an offline translation app helps. Dress modestly to visit mosques (women cover their hair, and scarves are often lent at the door), carry your passport at all times, and drink bottled or filtered water.
