Freetown climbs from the Sierra Leone River estuary into steep green hills, and south of it runs a peninsula of pale-sand beaches backed by rainforest. The city has an unexpected Canadian thread: it was settled in 1792 by Black Loyalists who sailed from Nova Scotia, and their descendants shaped its Krio language, its old wooden board houses and its easy, talkative street life. Spend an evening on Lumley Beach, then take the coast road south to River No. 2, Tokeh and Bureh, where the jungle runs right down to the sand!
When to go
The dry season, November to April, is the time for the beaches: sunny, hot and humid, with the harmattan bringing hazy skies from around December to February. From May the rains set in, and July and August are among the wettest months anywhere in West Africa, with days of heavy rain, rough seas and slippery hill roads. The shoulder months, November and late April into May, are hot but quieter. The Atlantic here has strong currents in every season, so swim where locals swim and stay close to shore.
Getting there from Montreal
There is no nonstop from Canada; expect one or two connections, usually via Brussels, Istanbul or Casablanca. From Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto. Freetown International Airport is at Lungi, across the wide estuary from the city, and the transfer is part of the trip: water taxis cross to Aberdeen, close to the beach hotels, in roughly half an hour, the slower car ferry runs between Tagrin and Kissy, and the road around the estuary takes several hours. Book your water taxi ahead, especially for a night arrival.

Good to know before you go
Freetown runs on shared taxis, minibuses called poda-podas, kekes (three-wheeled motorized rickshaws) and okadas (motorbike taxis); for visitors, a driver arranged through the hotel is the easiest option, especially for beach days down the peninsula. Traffic in the centre and on the hill roads is slow, so leave plenty of time. The currency is the leone, redenominated in 2022 by dropping three zeros, so confirm whether a price is quoted in old or new leones; cash is king and cards work mainly in the larger hotels. English is the official language and Krio is what you will hear on the street, and a few Krio greetings go a long way. Drink bottled water, take malaria prevention, and keep valuables out of sight on the beaches after dark.
