Fuerteventura is a windswept Canary Island of long pale beaches, turquoise water and rolling desert-like hills off the coast of northwest Africa. When to go
The Canaries are mild almost year-round, with warm days and cooler ocean breezes even in winter. Summer is hot and windy, which suits wind and kite sports, while winter is the popular escape for northern Europeans. There is little rain in any season, so pack for sun and wind.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
From Québec City or Montréal there is no direct flight, so you connect through a European or Spanish mainland hub, most often Madrid, and usually cross the Atlantic overnight. From Madrid or another Spanish city it is a short hop down to Fuerteventura (FUE). Give yourself enough layover time, as you will change planes and possibly terminals in Europe.

Good to know before you go
The currency is the euro and cards are widely accepted. Get around on the TIAHDE public buses, which link the main towns cheaply, and use taxis for shorter hops; ride-hailing is very limited on the island, so do not rely on it, while rented scooters and quads are popular for reaching quieter beaches. Spanish is the main language though English and German are common in resort areas, and driving is on the right.
