Washington, D.C. lines up an almost unfair amount of sightseeing along a single grassy mall: the Capitol, the White House, the Lincoln Memorial and a whole row of world-class museums that cost absolutely nothing to enter. Flying into BWI, the capital region's budget-friendly airport, adds a bonus city to the trip, since Baltimore's lively Inner Harbor sits just up the road. Few city breaks give you this much for this little!
When to go
Late March to April is cherry-blossom season, when the Tidal Basin turns pink and the city is at its prettiest. September and October offer warm, clear days without summer's heat and humidity; winters are grey but quiet and cheap.
Getting there from Quebec City
From eastern Canada, BWI is a short flight with a connection through a US hub, and departures from Montreal clear US customs before boarding thanks to preclearance. From the airport, MARC and Amtrak trains run from the BWI rail station to Washington's Union Station in about forty minutes, right at the foot of Capitol Hill.
What to see and do
- Museum-hopping the free Smithsonian institutions on the National Mall
- Walking the monuments from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial at dusk
- Exploring the boutiques and canal towpath of Georgetown
- Spending a harbour-side evening in Baltimore's Inner Harbor
Good to know before you go
The currency is the US dollar. The train is your friend here: MARC commuter trains from BWI are cheap, and once in Washington the Metro and Capital Bikeshare cover the whole city, so a car is genuinely unnecessary. Nearly every major museum is free, which balances out restaurant prices. Book popular sites like the Capitol tour ahead, and tip fifteen to twenty percent in restaurants.
