Hobart sits on the broad Derwent estuary at the foot of kunanyi/Mount Wellington, a small harbour capital where Georgian sandstone warehouses, fishing boats and one of the world's most talked-about private museums share the same waterfront. Founded in 1804, it is Australia's second-oldest capital, and the old streets of Battery Point and Salamanca Place still show it. The food is the other reason to come: oysters and salmon from the southern waters, scallop pies, cool-climate pinot noir from the Coal River Valley and single malt whisky distilled around the city.

When to go

Hobart has a cool, temperate climate and is one of Australia's driest capitals, but the weather turns quickly, so layers matter in every season. Summer (December to February) brings long days and highs in the low twenties, and late December is when the Sydney to Hobart yacht race finishes at Constitution Dock. Autumn is calm and settled, and in late April the native fagus beech turns gold on the high trails of Mount Field National Park. Winter (June to August) is cold and crisp, with highs around 12°C and snow regularly dusting the summit of kunanyi.

Getting there from Montreal

There is no nonstop from Eastern Canada, and Hobart adds a final domestic leg to an already long trip. From Quebec City (YQB) you connect through Montreal or Toronto, then fly from Vancouver or a US west coast hub to Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane before the short hop south to Hobart; from Montreal (YUL) the routing is the same minus the first leg. Expect two or three connections, well over a day in transit and a calendar day lost on the date line. Hobart Airport is about 20 minutes east of the city, linked by an airport express bus, taxis and Uber.

What to see and do

  • MONA, reached by ferry up the Derwent
  • Salamanca Market on Saturday and the lanes of Battery Point
  • The summit of kunanyi/Mount Wellington
  • Port Arthur Historic Site on the Tasman Peninsula
  • Bruny Island's oysters, cheese and the Neck lookout
  • Russell Falls in Mount Field National Park

Good to know before you go

Central Hobart, Salamanca and Battery Point are easy on foot, Metro Tasmania buses cover the suburbs, and Uber and taxis fill the gaps; MONA runs its own ferry from Brooke Street Pier. Port Arthur (about 90 minutes away), Bruny Island and Mount Field are all covered by day tours with hotel pickup, which spares you Tasmania's winding roads, and the Bruny car ferry leaves from Kettering, south of the city. The currency is the Australian dollar, cards work almost everywhere and tap water is safe. Tasmania's biosecurity rules forbid bringing fresh fruit and vegetables in from mainland Australia, so finish them before you land or drop them in the bins at the airport. The summit road up kunanyi can close for snow or ice, even outside winter, so check before heading up.
