Petra, the rose-red city carved into desert cliffs more than two thousand years ago, is the reason most travellers fly into Aqaba, Jordan's laid-back port on the Red Sea. The flight drops you between three wonders: the ancient Nabataean capital, the Mars-like dunes of Wadi Rum, and coral reefs right off the beach. Few trips pack this much contrast into a single week!
When to go
Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) bring warm days and cool desert nights, ideal for hiking Petra and camping in Wadi Rum. Summer is fiercely hot inland, while winter stays mild on the coast.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
From eastern Canada, Aqaba is reached with a connection through a European or Middle Eastern hub. The airport is small and quick, and Petra is about a two-hour drive north. Check Jordan's entry requirements before you go; the Jordan Pass bundles the visa with Petra admission for most visitors.
What to see and do
- Walking the Siq until the Treasury of Petra appears
- Sleeping under the stars in a Wadi Rum desert camp
- Snorkelling the Red Sea coral reefs off Aqaba
- Watching the sunset from Petra's Monastery viewpoint
Good to know before you go
The currency is the Jordanian dinar and English is widely understood in tourist areas. Taxis are the main way around Aqaba and fares are best agreed before you get in; JETT coaches and shared minibuses link Aqaba to Petra and Wadi Rum cheaply, and organized day tours are easy to book locally. Carry water and sun protection everywhere, dress modestly outside resort areas, and keep small cash for entrance fees and tips.
