Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates, a spread-out city on an island in the Gulf, calmer and greener than its neighbour Dubai. Its landmarks come in grand gestures: the white marble domes of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi floating under its latticed dome on Saadiyat Island, and the palatial halls of Qasr Al Watan. Between them you will find a long Corniche of beaches and parks, mangrove lagoons you can paddle through, and the start of the road to the great dunes of Liwa.

When to go

The best months run from November to March, with warm, sunny days, cool evenings and a calm sea, ideal for the beaches and the desert. April and October are hot but manageable, while June to September brings extreme heat and humidity that push life into air-conditioned malls and museums, though hotel rates fall. The Formula 1 Grand Prix on Yas Island, usually held in late November or early December, fills hotels and lifts prices across the city.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There are nonstop flights between Toronto and Abu Dhabi, so from Montreal (YUL) the simplest routing is usually one connection in Toronto, or one stop at a European hub; from Quebec City (YQB), expect two connections. Flights are long and often overnight, with a time difference of eight or nine hours depending on the season. The airport is on the mainland, about 30 to 40 minutes by taxi from the Corniche and downtown, and public buses also link it to the city.

What to see and do

  • The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at sunset
  • The Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island
  • Qasr Al Watan, the presidential palace open to visitors
  • Kayaking through the city's eastern mangroves
  • The theme parks and Formula 1 circuit of Yas Island
  • A trip to the Liwa Oasis dunes on the edge of the Empty Quarter

Good to know before you go

Abu Dhabi has no metro, so taxis are the main way around: they are metered, clean and inexpensive, and Uber and Careem both work across the city. Public buses run on a rechargeable Hafilat card and are cheap but slower, and the long Corniche is pleasant to walk or cycle in the cooler months. The currency is the UAE dirham and cards are accepted almost everywhere; Arabic is the official language, but English is spoken everywhere you are likely to go. Tap water is desalinated and treated, though most people drink bottled. Dress modestly away from beaches and pools, cover arms and legs at the Grand Mosque (women also cover their hair), and during Ramadan be discreet about eating or drinking in public in daylight hours.
