Paphos sits on the southwest coast of Cyprus, where the island's mythology begins: according to legend, Aphrodite rose from the sea a short drive along the shore. The town splits in two, with the harbour, seafront and archaeological sites of Kato Paphos below and the older market quarter of Ktima on the ridge above. Its Roman villas hold some of the finest floor mosaics in the Mediterranean, and within an hour you can reach the wild Akamas peninsula, gorges, vineyards and quiet mountain villages.

When to go

Paphos sees sunshine on most days of the year. Spring (April to early June) brings warm days and wildflowers on the hills, and autumn (September to November) keeps the sea warm enough for swimming. July and August are hot, dry and crowded with holidaymakers, while winter is mild and quiet, with most of the year's rain and occasional snow up in the Troodos mountains.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There are no nonstop flights from Canada to Cyprus. From Montreal (YUL), you usually connect through a European hub such as London, Athens or Frankfurt, and from Quebec City (YQB) the trip typically adds a first leg to Montreal or Toronto, for two connections in all. Many routings land at Larnaca instead, on the southeast coast, about an hour and a half from Paphos by intercity bus or shuttle. Paphos airport is about 15 kilometres southeast of town, roughly 20 minutes by taxi, with a public bus to Kato Paphos.

Good to know before you go

Local buses connect Kato Paphos, Ktima, Coral Bay and the airport, and intercity buses run to Limassol, Larnaca and Nicosia; Bolt and taxis cover the rest, and the harbour, mosaics and seafront are easy to explore on foot. To reach Akamas or the mountain villages without driving, join a day tour or hire a taxi for the day. The currency is the euro and cards are widely accepted; Greek is the main language, but English is spoken almost everywhere, a legacy of British rule that also explains why traffic drives on the left. Tap water is safe to drink, though many people buy bottled. The island is divided, and crossing to the north is done at official checkpoints, several of them in Nicosia, with your passport.
