La Ceiba is the largest city on Honduras's Caribbean coast, a humid port squeezed between the sea and the steep, forested wall of Pico Bonito. The city itself is practical rather than pretty, with a seafront malecón, busy markets and the ferry dock, but within an hour you can be rafting the Río Cangrejal, hiking to rainforest waterfalls or eating coconut seafood soup in a Garífuna village like Sambo Creek. It is also where the ferries leave for Roatán and Utila, so many travellers pass through on their way to the Bay Islands.

When to go

La Ceiba is hot and humid all year and one of the rainiest places in Honduras. The drier stretch generally runs from about March to August, while October to January brings the heaviest rain as northern fronts stall against the mountains, and the coast is exposed during the June to November hurricane season. In May, the city holds its Gran Carnaval Internacional for its patron saint, San Isidro, with a large parade and street parties.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There is no nonstop from Quebec City or Montreal, and few international flights land at La Ceiba itself, so plan on at least two connections. From Montreal (YUL), the common routings go through a US hub such as Miami or Houston to San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa or Roatán, then a short domestic flight to Golosón Airport; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto. You can also fly into San Pedro Sula and take a first-class intercity coach, roughly three hours east along the coast. Golosón is on the western edge of town, about 15 minutes from the centre by taxi.

What to see and do

  • White-water rafting on the Río Cangrejal
  • Trails and waterfalls in Pico Bonito National Park
  • The mangrove channels of the Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge
  • Garífuna food and beaches at Sambo Creek and Corozal
  • Boat trips to the Cayos Cochinos marine reserve

Good to know before you go

Getting around is mostly by taxi: cabs run as colectivos, picking up several passengers at a flat fare inside the city, so ask for a private ride if you want the car to yourself. Ride-hailing is thin outside Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, and lodges and tour operators usually include transport to the Cangrejal, Pico Bonito or Sambo Creek. The ferries to Roatán and Utila leave from the Muelle de Cabotaje east of town. The currency is the lempira, many tourism businesses take US dollars, cards work mainly in hotels, and Spanish is the language. Honduras has regional crime advisories, so check the Government of Canada travel advice (travel.gc.ca) before booking, avoid walking around after dark, keep valuables out of sight and drink bottled water.

Entry requirements and health

No visa needed

Good news: with a Canadian passport you can just show up for a short tourist stay, no visa needed. Keep an eye on how long you're allowed to stay so your trip fits.

Vaccines and health

Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water. Malaria is present in some areas, so ask a clinic whether antimalarials make sense for your route.

General orientation for a Canadian passport on a short tourist trip, not legal or medical advice. Confirm with official sources, and see a travel health clinic four to six weeks before departure.
